Heartless

a film adaption of the novel by marissa meyer

Heartless is a novel which serves as an origin story for the Queen of Hearts. My concept focused on an upside down/inside out aesthetic, with x ray prints and see through elements. Loosely inspired by late 19th century clothing, but with contemporary elements. I also used motifs from playing cards and chess pieces to distinguish the two kingdoms from the book.

Following my degree hand-in, I chose to make a third costume with fabrics I owned, this time it is Elsie, one of the sisters at the bottom of the Treacle well, who dresses up as a frog.

As one of the sisters. Elsie has an animal she dresses up as: a frog. Her favourite items to collect are flowers. The crinoline represents the frog`s round shape, while her fabric is printed frog skin. The prophecy “murderer, martyr, monarch, mad” is flocked, embroidered, and printed onto all the sisters` costume, as they write it everywhere. She has gloves to simulate a frog`s palm while her bodice has laser cut circles in the shape of a frog`s skin on the back. The top layer of her skirt is an x ray print and she has an x ray of a frog embroidered on her chest.
